How to Grow Jicama
Pachyrhizus erosus
Jicama needs heat, full sun, and a minimum of 5 frost-free months to produce worthwhile tubers. Start seeds indoors in warmth, transplant after all frost risk passes into rich, well-drained soil. Provide a strong trellis — vines can reach 4–5 m. Remove all flowers as they appear to channel energy into tuber production. Note that all above-ground parts are toxic; only the crisp white tuber is edible. Harvest before the first frost.
When to Start
Best started from plugs, corms, or slips. Pot up indoors 5 weeks before last frost, then plant out once soil reaches 20°C.

- Apply a balanced fertiliser at planting. Once the plant is established, switch to a low-nitrogen, high-potash feed to promote tuber development over leaf growth.
- Jicama needs a very long warm season — at least 5 frost-free months. In temperate climates, start indoors early and grow under cover or in the warmest sheltered spot. Remove all flowers to keep energy in the tuber. All above-ground parts (seeds, leaves, pods) are toxic — only the tuber is edible.
