How to Grow Skyflower

Duranta erecta

Perennial

Skyflower thrives in full sun and well-draining soil. It blooms prolifically from late spring through autumn with cascading lilac-blue flower clusters followed by golden berries — note that berries are toxic. Plant in a sheltered frost-free spot or grow in a container to overwinter indoors in cooler climates. Prune after each flowering flush to keep it compact. Water regularly during the growing season; established plants are moderately drought-tolerant.

Care Essentials

Spring, once new growth is established. Use a balanced slow-release fertiliser. A second feed in midsummer extends the flowering season.

Watch For

  • Whitefly
  • Spider mites (in dry conditions)
  • Scale insects
  • Powdery mildew
  • Root rot in waterlogged soil

Companions

Bougainvillea, Lantana, Hibiscus, Plumbago

Care Requirements

Light

Full sun — 6+ hours daily

Needs at least 6 hours of direct sun for best flowering. In partial shade growth is leggy and blooming is sparse.

Watering

Regular watering; drought-tolerant once established

Water when the top 2 cm of soil feels dry. Established plants tolerate short dry spells but flower best with consistent moisture. Avoid waterlogging.

Fertilizing

Balanced feed in spring and midsummer

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. A second feed in midsummer sustains the long bloom season. Avoid excessive nitrogen which promotes leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Pruning

Prune after each flowering flush

Cut flowered shoots back by one third after each main bloom. This keeps the plant compact, promotes fresh growth, and triggers a second flush of flowers.
