How to Grow Black Cumin (Kalonji)
Nigella sativa
Black cumin (kalonji) is a cool-season annual grown for its small, pungent black seeds used in Middle Eastern and South Asian cooking. Direct sow in spring or autumn into a sunny, well-drained bed — it dislikes root disturbance. Thin to 20cm. Water sparingly once established. The pale blue flowers are attractive but leave them to form seed pods. Harvest pods when papery and dry thoroughly before storing the seeds.
When to Start
Sow indoors 6 weeks before last frost, or direct sow outdoors after frost risk has passed and soil reaches 10°C.

Care Essentials
- Rarely needs feeding. Incorporate compost before sowing. Excess nitrogen produces lush growth at the expense of seed production.
- Nigella sativa (black cumin/kalonji) is distinct from the ornamental Nigella damascena (Love-in-a-Mist) in the catalog. N. sativa is grown as a culinary spice with smaller, plainer pale blue flowers, while N. damascena has showy flowers surrounded by feathery bracts. Both have black seeds but only N. sativa is the culinary spice.
