How to Grow Flowering Quince
Chaenomeles speciosa
Flowering quince is one of the earliest shrubs to bloom, producing clusters of vivid orange-red flowers on bare branches in late winter and early spring. It thrives in almost any soil and aspect — including north-facing walls where little else flowers. Train against a wall for a spectacular early display, or grow as a free-standing shrub or informal hedge. Prune immediately after flowering by shortening flowered shoots to 2-3 buds. The small aromatic fruits in autumn can be made into jelly. Be aware of the thorns when pruning.

Flowers before leaves

The small aromatic fruits ripen in autumn. They are too hard and astringent to eat raw but make excellent jelly, membrillo paste, or can be added to apple dishes for fragrance.
