How to Grow Ashwagandha

Withania somnifera

Perennial

Ashwagandha is a warm-climate perennial sub-shrub grown primarily for its medicinal roots, harvested after 150-180 days. It thrives in full sun with well-drained, sandy soil and minimal water. Sow indoors at 21-27°C eight weeks before last frost, transplant after nights stay above 10°C. Avoid overwatering and heavy feeding, as lean conditions produce stronger root compounds. In cool climates, grow as an annual or overwinter indoors above 10°C.

Care Essentials

Generally unnecessary. Lean soil produces stronger medicinal root compounds. A light compost top-dress in spring is sufficient.

Watch For

  • Spider mites in dry conditions
  • Root rot from overwatering
  • Aphids on young growth

Care Requirements

Light

Full sun, minimum 6 hours direct sunlight

Needs at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Tolerates even more sun in cooler climates. Insufficient light produces leggy growth with poor root development.

Watering

Drought-tolerant, water sparingly

Allow the top 3-5 cm of soil to dry between waterings. Never let plants sit in saturated soil. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure, leading to root rot.

Fertilizing

Generally unnecessary

Lean soil produces stronger medicinal compounds. A light compost top-dress in spring is sufficient. Over-fertilizing produces lush foliage but poor root development.

Pruning

Cut back before overwintering

Prune by half before bringing indoors for winter. Remove spent flower stems to direct energy to root growth. Trim winter-damaged growth in spring.

Spacing

60 cm between plants

Allow 60 cm between plants for adequate airflow and root development. The deep taproot needs undisturbed soil depth. Grows well in large deep pots.

Temperature

Needs warmth, not frost-hardy

Grows best between 21-32°C. Not frost-hardy. Bring indoors before temperatures drop below 10°C. Overwinter in a bright room at 15-18°C.

Growing Tips

Warm start is essential

Sow indoors at 21-27°C eight weeks before last frost. Seeds need consistent warmth and emerge in 10-14 days. Bottom heat from a seedling mat helps greatly.

Let soil dry between waterings

Ashwagandha is drought-tolerant and hates wet feet. Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry before watering again. Overwatering causes root rot.

Harvest when berries ripen

Roots are ready 150-180 days after planting when berries turn red. Use a digging fork in a wide circle to preserve the long taproot intact.

Spacing & Planting

Plant spacing 60 cm
Row spacing 75 cm
Mature height 150 cm
Mature spread 60 cm

Allow 60 cm between plants for adequate airflow and root development. Grows as an upright sub-shrub to 150 cm. Taproot needs undisturbed depth.
