How to Grow Crown of Thorns

Euphorbia milii

Perennial

Crown of Thorns is one of the most free-flowering houseplants available, blooming almost year-round indoors with minimal effort. It thrives in bright direct sunlight and is highly drought-tolerant — the most common mistake is overwatering. Plant in a well-draining cactus or succulent compost and water only when the soil is dry to the touch. The milky sap is toxic to humans and pets; always wear gloves when handling. Keep above 10°C and away from cold draughts.

Care Essentials

Feed monthly with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser or dedicated succulent feed during the active growing season (spring to autumn). Withhold feeding entirely in winter when growth slows.

  • Mealybug
  • Spider mites
  • Scale insects
  • Root rot from overwatering
  • Leaf drop from cold draughts or overwatering

Care Requirements

Light

Bright direct sun; south or west window

Crown of Thorns needs at least 3–4 hours of direct sunlight daily to flower well. A south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal. It tolerates bright indirect light but flowering will be reduced.

Watering

Allow soil to dry completely between waterings

Water thoroughly, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. In summer this may be every 1–2 weeks; in winter every 3–4 weeks. Overwatering is the leading cause of death.

Fertilizing

Monthly balanced feed, spring to autumn only

Apply a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser or succulent feed once a month from spring through autumn. Do not feed in winter — the plant is semi-dormant and excess nutrients cause weak, soft growth.

Pruning

Prune lightly to shape; wear gloves

Prune in spring to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushier growth. Cut just above a leaf node. Wear gloves to protect against the irritating latex sap, and allow cut ends to callous before watering.

Spacing

40–60 cm between plants; single pot indoors

Indoors, grow as a single specimen in a 15–25 cm terracotta pot with drainage holes. Outdoors in warm climates, space 40–60 cm apart to allow good air circulation.

Support

No support needed

Crown of Thorns develops a woody, self-supporting stem as it matures. No staking or support is required. Repot only when root-bound, as it flowers better when slightly pot-bound.

Growing Tips

Bright sun needed

Crown of Thorns blooms best with several hours of direct sun each day. A south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal. Low light leads to leggy growth and sparse flowering.

Let it dry out

Water only when the soil is completely dry to the touch — this plant is far more likely to die from overwatering than drought. In winter, water just enough to prevent shrivelling.

Toxic sap — wear gloves

The milky white latex sap causes skin irritation and is toxic if ingested by humans or pets. Always wear gloves when pruning or handling cut stems, and wash hands thoroughly afterwards.

Warmth year-round

Keep above 10°C at all times and away from cold draughts or windows that get very cold at night in winter. Sudden temperature drops cause leaf drop.
