How to Grow Avocado
Persea americana
In the UK, avocados are best grown as conservatory or greenhouse plants in large containers with free-draining compost. They need bright light, warmth, and protection from any frost. Water regularly during the growing season but ensure excellent drainage — root rot is the main killer. Feed every six to eight weeks with a balanced fertiliser. Pinch out growing tips to encourage bushy growth. Fruiting is possible but unreliable without long, warm summers.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Every 6–8 weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser. Reduce in winter.
Watch For
- Root rot (Phytophthora)
- Spider mites
- Scale insects

☀️ Light
Maximum bright light; supplement in winter
Bright, direct light is essential. Grow in a conservatory or greenhouse in the UK with maximum light. Supplement with grow lights in winter if needed.
💧 Watering
Regular but let top soil dry between waterings
Water regularly during the growing season but allow the top few centimetres to dry between waterings. Overwatering causes root rot, the main killer of UK avocados.
🌱 Fertilizing
Balanced feed every 6-8 weeks in season
Feed every 6-8 weeks with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Reduce in winter. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds on mature trees.
✂️ Pruning
Pinch tips when young; prune in spring
Pinch out growing tips when young to encourage branching. Prune in spring to maintain shape. Remove dead or damaged wood as needed.
❄️ Overwintering
Bring indoors before frost; keep above 10°C
Not frost-hardy. Bring containers indoors before the first frost. Maintain above 10°C and provide as much light as possible through winter.
🍎 Harvesting
Pick full-sized; ripen indoors over 5-10 days
Avocados ripen off the tree. Pick when full-sized and let them soften indoors over 5-10 days at room temperature.
Growing Tips
Container culture in the UK
Grow in a container with free-draining compost and bring indoors before the first frost.
Drainage above all
Excellent drainage is critical. Root rot from waterlogging is the most common cause of failure.
Pinch for bushiness
Pinch out the growing tip when the plant reaches about 30 cm to encourage branching and a bushier shape.
Ripen off the tree
Avocados ripen off the tree. Pick when full-sized and let them soften indoors over 5–10 days.
Pests & Diseases
Pest Red Spider Mite
Identification: Fine webbing on leaf undersides, stippled yellowing leaves, tiny mites visible with a hand lens
- Increase humidity by misting regularly
- Introduce predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis under glass
- Spray with fatty acid-based miticide, ensuring good coverage of leaf undersides
Pest Scale Insects
Identification: Small brown or white bumps on stems and leaf undersides, sticky honeydew and sooty mould
- Wipe off with a cloth dipped in soapy water
- Introduce parasitic wasps as biological control under glass
- Spray with plant oil-based insecticide
Pest Mealybug
Identification: White cottony masses in leaf axils and on stems, sticky honeydew
- Dab with a cotton bud soaked in methylated spirit
- Introduce Cryptolaemus ladybird as biological control
- Spray with fatty acid or plant oil-based insecticide
Disease Phytophthora Root Rot Phytophthora cinnamomi
Symptoms: Yellowing and wilting leaves, dark mushy roots, sudden plant collapse despite moist soil
Treatment: Remove from pot, trim all rotten roots, repot in fresh free-draining compost. Reduce watering drastically
Prevention: Use very well-drained compost with added perlite. Never let pots sit in water. Water only when top few cm are dry
Disease Anthracnose Colletotrichum gloeosporioides
Symptoms: Dark sunken spots on fruit, brown-black lesions on leaves, premature leaf drop
Treatment: Remove and destroy affected leaves and fruit. Improve air circulation
Prevention: Avoid overhead watering. Ensure good ventilation around the plant
Popular Varieties
Fuerte
A green-skinned variety with a pear shape and excellent flavour, slightly less oily than Hass. The skin remains green when ripe, and it is more cold-tolerant than Hass.
Hass
The gold standard for avocados, featuring pebbly skin that turns black when ripe. Has a high oil content and creamy texture.
Spacing & Planting
| Plant spacing | 600 cm |
| Row spacing | 700 cm |
| Mature height | 800 cm |
| Mature spread | 500 cm |
Standard trees 6-9m apart. Can be kept smaller with pruning. Dwarf varieties 4-5m.
