How to Grow Muhly Grass
Muhlenbergia capillaris
Muhly grass is a warm-season ornamental grass prized for its spectacular pink-purple flower clouds in autumn. Plant in full sun with well-drained soil, spacing 75-90 cm apart. It is extremely drought-tolerant once established and thrives in heat, poor soil, and coastal conditions. Growth begins late in spring; the real show comes in September-October when the entire plant erupts in airy pink inflorescences that glow at sunset. Leave the plumes standing through winter, then cut back to 10-15 cm in late February before new growth appears. Divide congested clumps every 4-5 years in spring.
