How to Grow Heuchera / Heucherella
Heuchera
Heucheras and heucherellas are grown primarily for their stunning evergreen foliage in shades of purple, lime, silver, and amber. They thrive in partial shade with well-drained soil and make excellent border edging or container plants. Divide and replant every three to four years as the woody crowns rise above soil level. Vine weevil is the main threat — check roots regularly, especially in containers.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Mulch with compost in spring. Light liquid feed in summer for container plants.
Watch For
- Vine weevil (major pest)
- Rust
- Leaf scorch in full sun

☀️ Light
Partial shade; full sun scorches, deep shade dulls colour
Partial shade is best for most varieties. Full sun can scorch leaves, especially dark-leaved types. Deep shade dulls the foliage colours. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal.
💧 Watering
Moist but well-drained; avoid waterlogging
Keep soil consistently moist but well-drained. Water regularly in dry spells, especially container plants. Avoid waterlogging which causes crown rot.
🌱 Fertilizing
Compost mulch in spring; light liquid feed for containers
Mulch with compost in spring. Container plants benefit from a light liquid feed through summer. Avoid heavy feeding which produces soft, vulnerable growth.
✂️ Pruning
Remove spent flower stems; tidy dead leaves in spring
Remove spent flower stems after blooming by cutting to the base. Tidy dead or damaged leaves in spring. The foliage is the main attraction.
🍂 Mulching
Spring mulch; replant rising crowns deeper every 3–4 years
Mulch around plants in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. As woody crowns rise above soil level, divide and replant deeper every three to four years.
Growing Tips
Vine weevil vigilance
Check roots for the creamy C-shaped grubs of vine weevil, especially in containers. Use biological nematode control in late summer as a preventative.
Replant rising crowns
As crowns become woody and lift above the soil, divide and replant them deeper. This rejuvenates the plant and prevents it drying out.
Remove spent flower stems
Cut flower stems back to the base after blooming. The foliage is the main attraction, and removing flowers keeps the plant tidy.
Partial shade is best
Most heucheras colour best in partial shade. Full sun can scorch leaves, especially dark-leaved varieties, while deep shade dulls the foliage colours.
Pests & Diseases
Pest Vine Weevil
Identification: Notched leaf edges from adult feeding at night; sudden wilting and collapse from root-feeding larvae in pots
- Apply Heterorhabditis nematodes to compost in late summer
- Check root balls when repotting and destroy cream-coloured C-shaped larvae
- Grow in open ground where possible — larvae are less damaging than in containers
- Drench containers with acetamiprid-based vine weevil killer in spring and late summer
Pest Slugs and Snails
Identification: Irregular holes in leaves; slime trails on and around plants; damage worst overnight and in wet weather
- Apply biological nematode control (Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) in spring
- Use copper tape around containers; set beer traps
- Ferric phosphate slug pellets (wildlife-safe)
Disease Heuchera Rust Puccinia heucherae
Symptoms: Orange-brown pustules on leaf undersides with corresponding yellow spots on upper surfaces; premature leaf drop
Treatment: Remove and destroy affected leaves promptly; improve air circulation
Prevention: Avoid overhead watering; space plants for good airflow; clear fallen debris
Disease Crown Rot
Symptoms: Leaves wilting and collapsing from the centre of the plant; crown soft and mushy at soil level; foul smell
Treatment: Remove and destroy affected plants; do not replant heucheras in the same spot
Prevention: Ensure good drainage; avoid burying crowns too deeply; divide and replant every 3–4 years
Popular Varieties
