How to Grow Firecracker Plant

Russelia equisetiformis

Perennial

Firecracker Plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soil in warm, frost-free climates (zones 9-11). Water regularly until established, then reduce as it becomes drought-tolerant. Feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertiliser. Prune lightly in late winter to maintain its graceful fountain shape. An outstanding hummingbird plant that flowers almost year-round in warm gardens.

Care Essentials

Spring and early summer with a balanced slow-release fertiliser. Avoid excessive nitrogen which promotes foliage over flowers.

Watch For

  • Aphids on new shoots
  • Spider mites in hot dry conditions
  • Scale insects on stems
  • Root rot in waterlogged soil

Companions

Bougainvillea, Lantana, Plumbago, Salvia, Agapanthus

Care Requirements

Light

Full sun

Needs at least 6-8 hours of direct sun daily. Full sun produces the most prolific flowering. Tolerates partial shade but flowering is reduced.

Watering

Low once established; moderate when young

Water regularly when newly planted. Once established, Firecracker Plant is drought-tolerant and needs only occasional deep watering. Avoid waterlogged soil.

Fertilizing

Light feed in spring

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds which encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Pruning

Light trim in late winter

Cut back straggly stems by up to one-third in late winter or early spring to maintain the fountain shape. Remove dead stems at any time.

Spacing

100-150 cm apart

Space plants 100-150 cm apart to allow the arching stems to cascade freely. Give more space when used as a ground cover on slopes.
