How to Grow Pineapple Lily

Eucomis comosa

Perennial

Eucomis (Pineapple Lily) is a half-hardy bulbous perennial grown for its dramatic late-summer flower spikes topped by a pineapple-like crown of bracts. Plant bulbs in spring in full sun and well-drained soil. Water moderately during growth and feed every 2–3 weeks. After flowering, allow foliage to die back naturally. In cold climates, lift bulbs in autumn and store frost-free; in milder gardens, mulch heavily and leave in the ground.

Care Essentials

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks during the growing season once shoots emerge.

Watch For

  • Vine weevil
  • Mealybug
  • Bulb rot in waterlogged soil

Companions

Agapanthus, Crocosmia, Kniphofia, Grasses

Care Requirements

Light

Full sun

Needs a warm, sheltered position in full sun for at least 6 hours a day. A south-facing border or container against a wall is ideal.

Watering

Moderate; reduce as leaves die back

Water moderately throughout the growing season. Avoid waterlogging, which causes bulb rot. Reduce watering once foliage starts to yellow in autumn.

Fertilizing

Balanced liquid feed every 2–3 weeks

Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks from when shoots emerge until flowering finishes. A tomato-type or seaweed feed works well.

Pruning

Remove spent flower spikes; cut back dead foliage

Deadhead or cut spent flower stems at the base after blooming. Allow foliage to die back naturally in autumn before cutting it away.

Spacing

30 cm apart

Plant bulbs 30 cm apart and 10–15 cm deep. This allows clumps to develop and spread over time without immediate overcrowding.

Support

Generally not needed

Flower stems are sturdy and rarely need staking except in very exposed, windy positions where a short cane may help.

Growing Tips

Plant bulbs in spring

Plant bulbs 10–15 cm deep in a warm, sheltered spot with full sun and free-draining soil after the risk of frost has passed.

Water during dry spells

Keep the soil moderately moist during the growing season, especially during flowering. Reduce watering as foliage yellows.

Lift or mulch for winter

In cold gardens, lift bulbs after foliage dies back, dry for a week, and store in dry compost. In frost-free areas, mulch 10–15 cm deep.
