How to Grow Abyssinian Banana
Ensete ventricosum
Ensete (Abyssinian Banana) is a tender exotic grown for its enormous paddle-shaped leaves. Plant out in late May in full sun in a large container with rich, free-draining compost. Water generously and feed every 2 weeks through summer. Before the first frost (usually October), bring indoors to a frost-free space — minimum 5 °C. The cultivar 'Maurelii' has dramatic red midribs and is the most widely available.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Feed every 2 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser from May to September. A high-nitrogen feed in early summer encourages the massive leaf growth that makes Ensete so dramatic.
Watch For
- Spider mites (especially when overwintering in dry conditions)
- Mealybug
- Scale insects
- Frost damage — even a light frost will blacken leaves
Companions
Canna lily, Ginger lily (Hedychium), Colocasia (elephant ear), Verbena bonariensis
Care Requirements
Light
Full sun; warmest sheltered position available
Needs at least 6–8 hours of direct sun daily. Choose the warmest, most sheltered spot in the garden — a south-facing wall is ideal. In cooler summers, growing against a warm wall significantly boosts growth.
Watering
High water demand in summer; reduce sharply in winter
Water deeply and regularly throughout the growing season — do not let the compost dry out. In hot weather, large plants may need watering daily. When overwintering in cool conditions, reduce to once every 2–3 weeks.
Fertilizing
Balanced liquid feed every 2 weeks, May to September
Ensete is a heavy feeder. Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2 weeks from May to September. A nitrogen-rich feed in early summer maximises the rapid leaf growth that makes this plant so dramatic.
Pruning
Remove dead leaves at base; no structural pruning needed
As lower leaves die back, remove them cleanly close to the pseudostem. No structural pruning is required. If the plant is damaged by cold, cut back dead material in spring once new growth resumes.
Spacing
2 m between plants; large container (60–100 L minimum)
If growing in a bed, allow 2 m between plants and 2.5 m between rows. Container growing is strongly recommended in the UK as it allows the plant to be moved indoors for winter. Use a 60–100 L container minimum.
Growing Tips
Bring in before first frost
Ensete is killed by frost. Watch forecasts from late September and move containers under cover at the first sign of frost. Even a single light frost will destroy the foliage and may kill the plant.
Feed heavily in summer
To achieve the dramatic leaf size Ensete is famous for, feed every 2 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser from May through September. A nitrogen-rich feed in early summer maximises leaf production.
Large container is essential
Use the biggest container you can manage (60–100 L minimum). A restricted root run stunts leaf size significantly. Use rich, moisture-retentive but free-draining compost. Top-dress with slow-release fertiliser each spring.
Water generously in summer, sparingly in winter
Ensete needs consistent moisture in summer — water deeply and regularly. When overwintering, reduce watering to once every 2–3 weeks. Never let the compost stay waterlogged, especially in winter.
Spacing & Planting
| Plant spacing | 200 cm |
| Row spacing | 250 cm |
| Mature height | 250 cm |
| Mature spread | 300 cm |
Dramatic architectural exotic best grown in large containers (minimum 60–100 L) that can be moved indoors for winter. Allow 2 m between plants if growing in a sheltered bed. Container growing is recommended in the UK as it allows frost-free overwintering.
