Corokia cotoneaster
Corokia cotoneaster is a striking architectural evergreen from New Zealand, grown primarily for its extraordinary dark zigzag interlacing stems. Small yellow star flowers appear in spring followed by orange berries in autumn. In the UK it is half-hardy and best given a sheltered, sunny position. Requires minimal pruning — the sculptural branching is its main appeal. Excellent in gravel gardens, coastal gardens, and as a structural specimen.

Care Requirements

Full sun to partial shade
Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. A sheltered sunny position maximises flowering and berry production.
Watering
Moderate, well-drained
Water to establish. Once settled, tolerates moderate drought. Good drainage is essential — will not tolerate waterlogged soil.
Pruning
Minimal — light shape only
Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Avoid heavy pruning which destroys the ornamental zigzag structure.

Light annual mulch
A light mulch of compost or grit around the base helps conserve moisture and protect roots in winter.
