How to Grow Evergreen Clematis
Clematis armandii
Clematis armandii is a unique evergreen clematis with long, glossy dark green leaves that provide year-round interest. Strongly fragrant white or pale pink flowers appear very early in March-April. Vigorous to 5-6m. Pruning Group 1: prune only after flowering to control size. Needs a sheltered, warm spot as foliage can be scorched by cold winds. Hardy to -10C. The combination of evergreen foliage, early flowers, and strong fragrance makes this unlike any other clematis.

Care Requirements
Light
Full sun to partial shade; sheltered from cold winds
Best in a warm, sheltered position with sun or light shade. A south or west-facing wall is ideal as it provides warmth and protection from damaging cold winds that scorch the evergreen foliage.
Watering
Regular watering; keep moist but not waterlogged
Water regularly, especially during dry spells and the first few years. The large evergreen leaves lose moisture year-round so the plant needs consistent moisture even in winter.
Fertilizing
Balanced spring feed; mulch to keep roots cool
Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring as growth begins. Mulch around the base with compost to keep roots cool and retain moisture. Not a heavy feeder.
Pruning
Pruning Group 1; prune after flowering only
No regular pruning required. If size control is needed, prune immediately after flowering in April-May. Flowers form on old wood so winter or early spring pruning removes flower buds.

Strong trellis or wires on a sheltered wall
Provide sturdy wires or trellis on a warm, sheltered wall. The evergreen foliage catches wind so the support must be secure. The plant can become heavy with age.
