How to Grow Blue Corydalis

Corydalis flexuosa

Perennial

Blue Corydalis thrives in cool, moist, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade — ideal under deciduous trees or in a north-facing border. Plant rhizomes or pot-grown plants in autumn or early spring. It flowers brilliantly from April to May then goes dormant in summer heat; mark the spot so you don't dig it up by accident. Mulch lightly in autumn and let it emerge naturally each spring.

Care Essentials

Mulch with well-rotted leaf mould or apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring as growth begins. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds which promote foliage at the expense of flowers.

Watch For

  • Slugs and snails on emerging shoots in spring
  • Downy mildew in humid, poorly ventilated conditions

Pet Safety

Cats: Toxic
Dogs: Toxic

Care Requirements

Light

Partial to full shade

Thrives in dappled shade or full shade under deciduous trees. Avoid hot afternoon sun which scorches the delicate foliage and triggers early dormancy.

Watering

Consistently moist, never waterlogged

Keep soil evenly moist throughout the growing season. Does not tolerate drought — dry conditions accelerate summer dormancy. Good drainage is still essential to prevent root rot.

Fertilizing

Light feed in spring

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser or mulch with leaf mould in early spring as growth resumes. Does not need heavy feeding.

Spacing

25-30 cm apart

Space plants 25-30 cm apart. They spread slowly by rhizomes to form attractive clumps over several years.
