How to Grow Arabian Jasmine

Jasminum sambac

Perennial

Arabian jasmine (Mogra) thrives in full sun with rich, well-drained soil and consistent moisture. In frost-free gardens it grows year-round as a twining shrub or climber; in cooler climates keep it in a pot and bring it inside before frost. Prune lightly after each flowering flush to encourage more blooms. Feed fortnightly in spring and summer, reduce in autumn, and stop over winter. Provide a trellis or support for the twining stems.

Care Essentials

Feed every two to three weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser from spring through summer. Reduce feeding in autumn and stop during any cool winter rest period.

Watch For

  • Aphids on new growth
  • Scale insects on stems
  • Whitefly in warm sheltered spots
  • Sooty mould (following sap-sucking pests)
  • Leaf drop from cold draughts or overwatering

Care Requirements

Light

Full sun; tolerates light shade

Arabian jasmine needs at least 6 hours of direct sun daily for the best flowering. It will tolerate light dappled shade but flowers less freely. Avoid deep shade.

Watering

Regular; keep moist but not waterlogged

Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist during active growth. Allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce in winter but never let the roots dry out completely.

Fertilizing

Fortnightly liquid feed in spring and summer

Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every two weeks during the growing and flowering season. Reduce to monthly in autumn and withhold entirely during cool dormancy.

Pruning

Light prune after each flower flush; harder in early spring

Remove spent flowering shoots by a third after each flush to encourage the next wave. Carry out a firmer renovation prune in late winter or early spring to keep the plant compact and well-shaped.

Spacing

80-120 cm apart; or one plant per large container

In garden beds space plants 80-120 cm apart. For containers, use a pot at least 30-40 cm in diameter with good drainage and repot every 2-3 years.

Support

Trellis or wire support recommended

Provide a trellis, wire frame, or bamboo canes as the twining stems need guidance. Without support, growth quickly becomes tangled and difficult to manage.

Growing Tips

Prune after each flush to get more flowers

Arabian jasmine flowers repeatedly through the warm months. Cutting back the spent flowering shoots by a third after each flush encourages vigorous new growth and a fresh wave of blooms within weeks.

Plant where you can enjoy the evening fragrance

The flowers open at dusk and are most intensely fragrant at night. Position near a window, door, or seating area so the perfume can be appreciated in the evening.

Train stems onto a support early

The twining stems quickly become tangled without guidance. Fix a trellis, wire frame, or bamboo canes in place when planting, and tie in new growth regularly.

Protect from frost

Even a light frost will damage Arabian jasmine. In temperate climates, pot culture is safest so the plant can be moved under glass or indoors when temperatures drop below 10°C.
