How to Grow Belladonna Lily
Amaryllis belladonna
Belladonna Lily produces large, fragrant pink trumpet flowers on bare leafless stems in August and September. Plant bulbs shallowly at the base of a warm sunny wall, and leave undisturbed — clumps improve with age. Strap-like leaves appear in autumn, grow through winter, then die back in early summer. After a warm dry dormancy, the flowers emerge first with no leaves present — the classic 'naked lady' effect. Distinct from Hippeastrum (indoor Christmas amaryllis). Toxic to cats and dogs.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Feed with a high-potash liquid fertiliser twice in the growing season — once as leaves emerge in autumn and again in early spring. Do not feed during summer dormancy or while flowers are open.
Watch For
- Narcissus bulb fly larvae tunnelling into bulbs
- Slugs on emerging foliage in autumn
- Red blotch (Stagonospora curtisii) — red streaks on leaves and stems
- Bulb rot from poor drainage or summer waterlogging

Care Requirements
Light
Full sun, sheltered south-facing wall
Requires a warm, sunny, sheltered position — ideally at the base of a south- or south-west-facing wall. Reflected warmth from the wall is key to reliable flowering. Will not flower well in shade or exposed positions.
Watering
Minimal; dry summer dormancy essential
Water sparingly in autumn and spring when leaves are growing. Keep completely dry during summer dormancy (June to August). Overwatering in summer is the main cause of failure — bulbs rot easily in wet soils.
Fertilizing
High-potash feed twice in the growing season
Apply a high-potash liquid fertiliser once when leaves emerge in autumn, and again in early spring. Do not feed during summer dormancy or while in flower.
Pruning
Remove dead leaves and spent flower stems
Cut spent flower stems to the base once flowers fade. Allow leaves to die back naturally in early summer — do not cut while still green. Tidy dead foliage once fully brown.
Spacing
15-20 cm apart, bulb shoulders just below surface
Plant with the bulb nose just 2-3 cm below the soil surface. Closer spacing encourages clump formation; leave undisturbed once established as disturbance reduces flowering.
Spacing & Planting
| Plant spacing | 20 cm |
| Row spacing | 25 cm |
| Mature height | 75 cm |
| Mature spread | 30 cm |
Plant bulbs with shoulders just below the soil surface, 15-20 cm apart. Best at the base of a south- or south-west-facing wall for reflected warmth. Do not disturb once established — clumps flower better over time.
