How to Grow Horse Chestnut

Aesculus hippocastanum

Perennial

Plant in deep, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. The species tree grows to 25m and needs a large space — assess carefully before planting. Smaller species like A. parviflora suit suburban gardens. Mulch at planting and water through the first summer. Pruning is rarely needed and should only be done in full dormancy to avoid sap bleed. Leaf miner moth causes cosmetic browning from midsummer but does not harm long-term tree health — no treatment is necessary.

Established trees need no feeding. Young trees benefit from a balanced fertiliser in spring for the first 2-3 years. Mulch annually with compost to maintain soil health.

Watch For

  • Leaf miner moth (Cameraria ohridella) — brown blotch mines on leaves
  • Bleeding canker (Phytophthora) — dark weeping patches on bark

Care Requirements

Light

Full sun or light shade

Thrives in full sun or dappled shade. Tolerates a range of light conditions once established.

Watering

Water young trees in dry spells

Established trees need no supplemental watering. Water newly planted trees through the first two summers until roots are well established.

Fertilizing

No feeding needed once established

Young trees benefit from a balanced fertiliser in spring for the first 2-3 years. After that, an annual compost mulch is sufficient.

Pruning

Minimal, only in full dormancy

Prune only dead, diseased, or hazardous branches in late autumn to winter. Bleeds sap heavily if cut in spring. Large trees require a qualified arborist.
