How to Grow Orange Jasmine
Murraya paniculata
Grow Orange Jasmine in full sun to light shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while young, feed in spring and prune after flowering to maintain a dense shape. Protect from frost in cold climates.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and again after a heavy flowering flush.
Care Requirements
Light
Full sun to light partial shade
Give Orange Jasmine at least six hours of direct sun for dense growth and abundant flowers. It tolerates light afternoon shade in hot climates, but deep shade reduces flowering and encourages a sparse shape.
Watering
Moderate, regular moisture
Water deeply when the top few centimetres of soil dry out, especially during the first two years and in hot weather. Established shrubs tolerate short dry periods, but avoid both prolonged drought and waterlogged soil.
Fertilizing
Balanced feed in spring
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring when new growth begins. A second light application after flowering can support continued growth, but avoid excessive nitrogen that produces leaves instead of flowers.
Pruning
Shape after flowering
Prune after the main flowering flush to maintain a dense outline and remove damaged or crossing branches. Regular light trimming is preferable to severe cuts into old wood.
Spacing
Space about 150 cm apart
Leave about 150 cm between shrubs for an informal specimen or hedge planting. Allow more room where the plant will reach its full mature spread without clipping.
Support
No routine support needed
A healthy Orange Jasmine forms a self-supporting shrub and does not normally need staking. Protect young plants from strong wind while their root systems establish.
