How to Grow Maqui Berry
Aristotelia chilensis
Maqui berry is a fast-growing evergreen shrub from Chile, valued for its intensely dark, antioxidant-rich berries. It needs full sun, well-drained soil, and mild winters (hardy to about -5°C). Plant male and female plants unless you have a self-fertile form. Water regularly until established; drought-tolerant thereafter. Harvest the deep purple-black berries in summer.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring as growth resumes. A light potash-rich feed in early summer supports fruit development.
Watch For
- Scale insects
- Aphids
- Powdery mildew
Care Requirements
Light
Full sun
Requires at least 6 hours of direct sun daily for good fruiting. Tolerates partial shade but berries are less abundant.
Watering
Moderate; drought-tolerant when established
Water regularly during the first two seasons to establish. Mature plants are drought-tolerant but fruit better with occasional deep watering in dry spells.
Fertilizing
Balanced feed in spring; light potash in early summer
Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. A light potash-rich feed in early summer supports berry development.
Pruning
Light shaping after harvest or in late winter
Prune lightly to maintain shape and remove dead or crossing wood after harvest or in late winter. Tolerates hard pruning if rejuvenation is needed.
Spacing
3 m apart
Space plants 3 m apart to allow for their vigorous spread. Closer planting reduces air circulation and can encourage disease.
Support
May need light staking when young
Young plants benefit from a stake for the first year while the root system establishes. Mature plants are self-supporting.
