Care Essentials

  • High-potash liquid feed weekly once flowering begins and throughout fruiting.

Chemical treatment:
  • Spray with pyrethrin-based insecticide if infestations are severe
Disease Powdery Mildew Podosphaera xanthii

Symptoms: White, powdery coating on upper leaf surfaces spreading to stems; leaves yellow and die back prematurely

Treatment: Remove badly affected leaves; spray with a sulphur-based fungicide or potassium bicarbonate solution

Prevention: Space plants for good airflow; water at the base; avoid overhead watering; ensure good ventilation in greenhouse

Disease Downy Mildew Pseudoperonospora cubensis

Symptoms: Yellow patches on upper leaf surface with grey-purple fuzzy growth on the underside; leaves collapse and die rapidly in wet conditions

Treatment: Remove and destroy affected leaves immediately; improve ventilation; avoid wetting foliage
