How to Grow Echeveria
Echeveria elegans
Echeveria is a compact rosette succulent that thrives on neglect — it needs bright light, very infrequent watering, and fast-draining cactus compost. It suits sunny windowsills and tolerates being forgotten for weeks at a time. The critical rule is never to water into the rosette centre; always water the soil at the base and let it drain fully, as trapped moisture rots the crown rapidly.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Feed monthly with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser during spring and summer only. Do not feed in autumn or winter — overfeeding causes soft, etiolated growth and loss of the compact rosette form.
Watch For
- Mealybug — white cottony masses in the rosette centre and under leaves
- Root mealybug on roots in dry compost
- Vine weevil grubs eating roots
- Root rot from overwatering or water trapped in the rosette

Care Requirements
Light
Bright direct light essential
Needs a sunny windowsill with several hours of direct sunlight daily. Insufficient light causes etiolation and loss of compact rosette form.
Watering
Soak and dry completely
Water soil thoroughly then allow to dry completely before watering again. Never water into the rosette centre as trapped moisture rots the crown rapidly.
Fertilizing
Diluted cactus feed monthly in summer
Feed monthly with diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser during spring and summer only. Do not feed in autumn or winter. Overfeeding causes soft, stretched growth.
