How to Grow Echeveria
Echeveria elegans
Echeveria is a compact rosette succulent that thrives on neglect — it needs bright light, very infrequent watering, and fast-draining cactus compost. It suits sunny windowsills and tolerates being forgotten for weeks at a time. The critical rule is never to water into the rosette centre; always water the soil at the base and let it drain fully, as trapped moisture rots the crown rapidly.

Care Essentials
Feed monthly with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser during spring and summer only. Do not feed in autumn or winter — overfeeding causes soft, etiolated growth and loss of the compact rosette form.
Watch For
- Mealybug — white cottony masses in the rosette centre and under leaves
- Root mealybug on roots in dry compost
- Vine weevil grubs eating roots
- Root rot from overwatering or water trapped in the rosette
