How to Grow Astilbe
Astilbe
Astilbe thrives in moist, humus-rich soil and partial shade — it struggles in dry or sunny spots. Plant in spring or autumn, enrich the planting hole with compost, and mulch generously to retain moisture. The feathery plumes flower from early to late summer depending on variety. Divide clumps every three to four years in spring to maintain vigour, and leave the dried flower heads standing for winter interest.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Spring with a balanced fertiliser. Mulch with compost to retain moisture.
Watch For
- Vine weevil
- Powdery mildew in dry conditions
- Leaf scorch in full sun

☀️ Light
Partial shade; avoid hot, dry, sunny spots
Partial shade is ideal. Astilbe struggles in hot, dry, sunny positions where leaves scorch. Morning sun with afternoon shade works well in most UK gardens.
🌿 Spacing
45cm apart; divide every 3-4 years
Space plants 45cm apart. They form dense clumps over time and benefit from division every three to four years.
💧 Watering
Needs consistent moisture; never let soil dry out
Consistent moisture is essential — astilbe will not thrive in dry soil. Water regularly during dry spells and never let the root zone dry out completely.
🌱 Fertilizing
Spring feed; generous moisture-retaining mulch
Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser. Mulch generously with compost or bark to retain moisture and add organic matter to the soil.
✂️ Pruning
Leave plumes for winter; cut back in late autumn
Leave dried flower plumes standing after flowering for autumn and winter interest. Cut back all dead foliage and stems in late autumn or early spring before new growth emerges.
🍂 Mulching
Thick spring mulch to keep roots cool and moist
Mulch thickly with compost or bark in spring to keep the root zone cool and consistently moist. This is one of the most important care tasks for astilbe.
Growing Tips
Shade and moisture
Moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade is ideal. Avoid hot, dry positions where leaves scorch.
Mulch to retain moisture
Mulch thickly with compost or bark in spring to keep the root zone cool and consistently moist.
Keep the seed heads
Leave the dried plumes standing after flowering — they add structure and interest through autumn and winter.
Divide to rejuvenate
Lift and divide congested clumps every 3–4 years in early spring to rejuvenate the plant.
Pests & Diseases
Pest Vine Weevil
Identification: Adults are dull black beetles with a long snout, active at night — look for notched leaf edges. Grubs are creamy-white C-shaped larvae found in the root zone
- Apply biological control nematodes (Steinernema kraussei) to compost in late summer or early autumn when soil is warm
- Check root zones when repotting and destroy any grubs found
- Encourage ground beetles and hedgehogs which eat adults
- Drench containers with a systemic insecticide containing acetamiprid in late summer
Pest Slugs and Snails
Identification: Irregular holes in young leaves and emerging shoots; slime trails visible on and around plants
- Use beer traps or copper tape barriers
- Apply organic slug pellets (ferric phosphate)
- Encourage hedgehogs, frogs, and ground beetles
- Apply slug pellets containing ferric phosphate around emerging shoots in spring
Disease Powdery Mildew Erysiphe spp.
Symptoms: White powdery coating on leaves, usually appearing when conditions are dry at the roots but humid in the air
Treatment: Remove and dispose of badly affected foliage. Water plants thoroughly at the base
Prevention: Keep soil consistently moist — powdery mildew on astilbe is almost always a sign of drought stress. Mulch generously
Disease Leaf Scorch
Symptoms: Leaf margins turn brown and crispy, progressing inward; whole leaves may shrivel in severe cases
Treatment: Water deeply and mulch to conserve moisture. Move plants to a shadier position if possible
Prevention: Plant in partial shade with moist, humus-rich soil. Mulch thickly and water during dry spells
