How to Grow Strawberry Ground Cherry
Physalis pruinosa
Strawberry ground cherries are compact warm-season annuals with a sweet, vanilla-strawberry flavour. Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. They need full sun, well-drained fertile soil, and consistent moisture. Much smaller than cape gooseberry — ideal for small gardens and pots. No staking needed. Feed fortnightly with tomato feed once flowering begins. Harvest when papery husks dry to straw colour and fruit falls freely. Fruits keep for weeks in their husks at room temperature. Self-seeds freely for next year.
When to Start
Start seeds indoors 7 weeks before your last frost date. Transplant outdoors once night temperatures stay above 10°C and soil has warmed to at least 15°C.

Care Essentials
- High-potash liquid feed (tomato feed) every 1-2 weeks once first flowers appear. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds which promote leafy growth over fruit.
- A compact, sprawling warm-season annual native to eastern North America. Much smaller than cape gooseberry — ideal for small gardens and containers. Self-seeds freely so expect volunteers next year. Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost and transplant after all frost risk has passed.
