How to Grow Sempervivum

Sempervivum tectorum

Perennial

Sempervivum (houseleek) are virtually indestructible succulent rosettes that thrive on neglect. They need full sun and excellent drainage — gritty, poor soil is ideal. Plant in rock gardens, walls, troughs, containers, or green roofs. They spread by producing offsets (chicks) around the mother rosette. Water sparingly if at all once established. The mother rosette flowers once then dies, but the surrounding chicks carry on. Hardy to well below -20C, they need no winter protection — just keep them dry.

Care Essentials

Rarely needs feeding. A light application of half-strength balanced liquid feed once in spring is sufficient. Too much fertiliser causes soft, leggy growth.

Watch For

  • Vine weevil
  • Mealybugs
  • Root rot

Care Requirements

☀️ Light

Full sun for best colour and form

Full sun is ideal. Sempervivum colour up best in strong light — shade causes them to stretch and lose their compact rosette form.

💧 Watering

Almost none; overwatering kills

Virtually no watering needed once established. In containers, water sparingly in prolonged dry spells during the growing season. Never water in winter. Overwatering is the main killer.

🌱 Fertilizing

Minimal; too much causes soft growth

Rarely needed. A light application of half-strength balanced liquid feed once in spring is more than enough. Rich soil and heavy feeding cause soft, leggy growth prone to rot.

✂️ Pruning

Remove dead flower stalks and spent rosettes

Remove dead flower stalks after blooming. Pull out dead mother rosettes after they flower and die. No other pruning needed.

🍂 Mulching

Grit top-dressing, not organic mulch

Top-dress with coarse grit or gravel rather than organic mulch. This keeps the crown dry, improves drainage, and suppresses weeds without retaining moisture.

Growing Tips

Drainage is everything

Sempervivum need sharp drainage above all else. Mix coarse grit or perlite into the planting medium at a 1:1 ratio with compost. In containers, use a cactus and succulent mix.

Propagate from offsets

The mother rosette (hen) produces offsets (chicks) on short stolons. These can be detached and replanted to start new colonies. They root easily with no special treatment.

Flowering means the rosette will die

Each rosette flowers only once and then dies (monocarpic). This is normal — simply remove the dead rosette and the surrounding chicks will fill the gap.

Pests & Diseases

Pest Vine Weevil

Identification: Notched leaf edges from adult feeding. Plants loosen in the pot and wilt — check for white C-shaped grubs in the compost around roots.

Organic treatment:
  • Apply Steinernema kraussei nematodes as a compost drench in spring or autumn
  • Pick off adults at night with a torch
  • Use sticky barriers around container rims
Chemical treatment:
  • No effective chemical controls currently available for home gardeners
Pest Mealybugs

Identification: White cottony masses between leaves and at the base of rosettes. Plants may yellow and weaken.

Organic treatment:
  • Dab individual bugs with a cotton bud dipped in methylated spirits
  • Spray with fatty acid-based insecticide
  • Improve air circulation
Chemical treatment:
  • Spray with a systemic insecticide containing acetamiprid
Disease Root Rot

Symptoms: Rosettes become soft and mushy at the base. Leaves turn translucent and fall away. Roots are brown and rotten.

Treatment: Remove and discard affected rosettes. Repot healthy offsets in fresh, gritty compost. Improve drainage.

Prevention: Use very well-drained compost with at least 50% grit. Never let containers sit in water. Avoid overhead watering in winter.

Disease Sempervivum Rust Endophyllum sempervivi

Symptoms: Orange-brown pustules on the undersides of leaves. Affected leaves may yellow and drop.

Treatment: Remove and destroy affected leaves. Improve air circulation around plants.

Prevention: Avoid overcrowding. Ensure good airflow. Remove dead leaves promptly.

Spacing & Planting

Plant spacing 15 cm
Row spacing 20 cm
Mature height 10 cm
Mature spread 30 cm

Space rosettes 10-15cm apart. They spread by offsets (chicks) and will fill gaps naturally. Ideal for rock gardens, troughs, green roofs, walls, and containers. Excellent drainage is essential.
