How to Grow Queen Palm

Syagrus romanzoffiana

Perennial

Queen palms are fast-growing feather palms native to South America. They thrive in full sun with moderate watering and well-drained fertile soil. Hardy to USDA zones 9b-11, they tolerate brief light frosts but not prolonged cold. Feed with palm-specific fertiliser in spring and remove dead fronds in autumn.

Care Essentials

Palm-specific fertiliser in spring (March-April) as new fronds emerge.

Watch For

  • Palm weevil
  • Scale insects
  • Fusarium wilt
  • Ganoderma butt rot

Care Requirements

Light

Full sun

Requires full sun for best growth. Tolerates some wind exposure but not heavy shade.

Watering

Moderate; more than typical palms

Water regularly, especially during establishment and dry spells. More moisture-demanding than most palms but still needs well-drained soil. Reduce watering in winter.

Fertilizing

Palm fertiliser in spring

Apply a slow-release palm-specific fertiliser (high in potassium and magnesium) in March-April. A second light feed in midsummer benefits fast-growing specimens.

Pruning

Dead frond removal in autumn

Remove only fully brown or dead fronds by cutting close to the trunk. Never remove green or yellowing fronds — the palm recycles their nutrients. Fruit clusters can be removed before they drop if mess is a concern.

Soil

Well-drained fertile soil

Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but adapts to sandy or clay soils if drainage is adequate. Slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal.
