How to Grow Pride of Barbados

Caesalpinia pulcherrima

Perennial

Pride of Barbados thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating heat and drought once established. Plant in the warmest, most sheltered spot available. In temperate climates, grow in a large container to overwinter under cover. Prune in early spring to shape and remove frost damage. Feed monthly during the long flowering season. Protect from any frost — even light freezes damage foliage and stems.

Care Requirements

☀️ Light

Full sun; minimum 6 hours direct sunlight

Requires full sun for best flowering. Tolerates light afternoon shade in very hot climates but flowers less. In temperate zones, choose the hottest south-facing wall or conservatory.

💧 Watering

Drought tolerant once established; water young plants regularly

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep roots. Once established, tolerates drought well. In containers, water when the top few centimetres of compost dry out. Avoid waterlogging at all costs.

🌱 Fertilizing

Monthly balanced feed during flowering season

Feed monthly from late spring through autumn with a balanced liquid fertiliser. A high-potash feed encourages more flowers. Stop feeding in winter when growth slows.

✂️ Pruning

Prune to shape in early spring; tolerates hard pruning

Prune in early spring before new growth. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Can be cut back hard to rejuvenate. Deadhead spent flower clusters to encourage continuous blooming.

Growing Tips

Full sun is essential

This plant needs at least 6 hours of direct sun to flower well. In partial shade it grows leggy with few blooms.

Drought tolerant once established

Water regularly for the first year, then only during prolonged dry spells. Overwatering causes root rot faster than underwatering causes stress.

Hard prune rejuvenates

If the plant becomes leggy or overgrown, cut back to 30cm in early spring. It regrows vigorously from old wood.

Container growing in cool climates

Grow in a large pot with free-draining compost. Move under cover when night temperatures drop below 5C consistently.
