How to Grow Pincushion Cactus

Mammillaria spp.

Perennial

Pincushion cactus is one of the easiest houseplants to grow. It needs bright direct light, very infrequent watering, and fast-draining cactus compost. Water only when the soil is completely dry, and stop watering entirely in winter. A cool dry rest period in winter triggers the characteristic ring of flowers in spring. Never let water sit on the plant body.

Care Essentials

Feed monthly with a diluted cactus fertiliser during spring and summer only. Do not feed in autumn or winter when the plant is dormant. Overfeeding causes soft, elongated growth and weakens the plant's natural compact form.

Watch For

  • Mealybug hiding between tubercles and under spines
  • Root mealybug on roots in dry compost
  • Root rot from overwatering or poor drainage
  • Scale insects on the stem surface

Care Requirements

Light

Bright direct light essential

Needs at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily. A south-facing windowsill is ideal. Insufficient light causes etiolation and prevents flowering.

Watering

Very infrequent, soak and dry

Water thoroughly only when soil is completely dry. In summer this may be every 2-3 weeks. Stop watering entirely in winter during dormancy.

Fertilizing

Diluted cactus feed monthly in summer

Feed monthly with diluted cactus fertiliser during spring and summer only. Do not feed in autumn or winter. A spring feed encourages flowering.

Pruning

No pruning needed

Pincushion cactus does not require pruning. Remove offsets if the cluster becomes too crowded or to propagate new plants.

Spacing

10-15 cm apart

Space 10-15 cm apart in group displays. Individual plants do well in small pots just slightly larger than the plant body.

Support

No support needed

Compact globular growth habit requires no staking or support. Ensure pot is heavy enough to prevent toppling if the plant clusters heavily.
