How to Grow Papaya

Carica papaya

Perennial

Papaya requires a heated greenhouse or warm conservatory in the UK, with temperatures above 15C at all times. Give maximum light, water regularly during growth but avoid waterlogging, and feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Papaya roots are extremely sensitive to wet conditions, so use very free-draining compost. Raise from seed in warmth and expect fast growth but a short productive life of three to four years.

Care Essentials

Feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser throughout the growing season. Papaya is a fast-growing heavy feeder — consistent nutrition is essential for strong growth and fruit production.

Watch For

  • Red spider mite (fine webbing, stippled yellowing leaves)
  • Glasshouse whitefly (clouds of tiny white insects)
  • Mealybug in leaf axils
  • Root rot from waterlogging (rapid collapse)
  • Powdery mildew in poor ventilation

Care Requirements

Light

Maximum light; heated greenhouse in the UK

Maximum light is essential. In the UK, grow in a heated greenhouse or conservatory with the brightest position available. Supplemental lighting helps in winter.

Watering

Regular in growth; reduce in winter; avoid waterlogging

Water regularly during active growth but never allow waterlogging. Reduce watering significantly in winter. Papaya roots are extremely sensitive to wet conditions.

Fertilizing

Fortnightly liquid feed during growing season

Feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season. Papaya is a heavy feeder and grows rapidly when well nourished.

Overwintering

Keep above 15C; heated greenhouse essential

Must be kept above 15C at all times in the UK. Grow in a heated greenhouse or warm conservatory. Cold draughts and low temperatures are fatal.

Growing Tips

Drainage is critical

Use very free-draining compost and ensure pots drain freely; papaya roots rot quickly in wet conditions.

Keep it warm

Maintain temperatures above 15C year-round; cold draughts and low temperatures are fatal.

Feed generously

Feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser during active growth; papaya is a heavy feeder.

Maximise light

Provide maximum light and consider supplemental grow lights during the short UK winter days.

Pests & Diseases

Pest Red Spider Mite

Identification: Fine webbing on leaf undersides; leaves develop pale stippling, yellow, and may drop; severe infestations weaken the plant

Organic treatment:
  • Mist foliage regularly to raise humidity
  • Introduce Phytoseiulus persimilis predatory mites under glass
Chemical treatment:
  • Spray with plant oil-based miticide, repeating every 7 days
Pest Glasshouse Whitefly

Identification: Tiny white-winged insects on leaf undersides that fly up when disturbed; sticky honeydew and sooty mould

Organic treatment:
  • Introduce Encarsia formosa parasitic wasp as biological control
  • Use yellow sticky traps to monitor and reduce numbers
Chemical treatment:
  • Spray with fatty acid-based insecticide, repeating every 5-7 days
Pest Mealybug

Identification: White cottony masses in leaf axils and on stems; sticky honeydew and sooty mould

Organic treatment:
  • Dab with methylated spirit on a cotton bud
  • Introduce Cryptolaemus montrouzieri ladybird as biological control
Chemical treatment:
  • Spray with fatty acid-based insecticide for heavy infestations
Disease Powdery Mildew Oidium caricae

Symptoms: White powdery coating on leaves; leaves may yellow and drop; fruit development may be affected

Treatment: Remove badly affected leaves; improve air circulation; reduce humidity around foliage

Prevention: Ensure good ventilation in the greenhouse; avoid overcrowding; water at the base

Disease Root Rot Phytophthora palmivora

Symptoms: Yellowing leaves, wilting, waterlogged compost, dark mushy roots; plant collapses rapidly

Treatment: Repot into fresh, free-draining compost; trim away rotten roots; reduce watering drastically

Prevention: Use very well-draining compost; water sparingly in winter; ensure pots have excellent drainage

Disease Damping Off Pythium spp.

Symptoms: Seedlings collapse at soil level; stems become thin and water-soaked at the base; rapid death of young plants

Treatment: Remove affected seedlings immediately; improve ventilation; reduce watering

Prevention: Use sterile seed compost; water from below; ensure good air circulation; avoid overcrowding seedlings

Popular Varieties

Maradol

A Mexican variety that produces heavy yields of large fruit weighing up to 2kg. Rich salmon-red flesh that is very sweet when fully ripe.

Solo

The standard Hawaiian variety, valued for producing small, pear-shaped fruit weighing about one pound. Hermaphroditic and reliably self-pollinating.

Spacing & Planting

Plant spacing 225 cm
Row spacing 300 cm
Mature height 500 cm
Mature spread 250 cm

Fast-growing herbaceous tree. Continuous flowering once mature (4-6 months from planting). Short-lived (3-4 years productive).
