How to Grow Pachysandra

Pachysandra terminalis

Perennial

Pachysandra is the ultimate low-maintenance evergreen ground cover for shade. It spreads steadily by underground runners to form a dense, weed-suppressing carpet of glossy dark green leaves. Plant 30cm apart in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in partial to full shade. It is slow to establish in the first year or two but once settled requires almost no attention. The small white flower spikes in spring are insignificant — this plant is all about the foliage.

Care Essentials

Rarely needed. A light mulch of leaf mould in spring helps maintain the humus-rich soil it prefers. Avoid heavy feeding which encourages leggy growth.

Watch For

  • Volutella blight (brown patches in foliage)
  • Scale insects on stems
  • Leaf scorch in too much sun

Companions

Hostas, Ferns, Hellebores, Epimedium

Care Requirements

Light

Partial to full shade

Thrives in deep shade under trees where little else grows. Scorches in full sun. North-facing banks and woodland floors are ideal.

Watering

Moderate, consistent moisture

Prefers moist but well-drained soil. Water during establishment and prolonged dry spells. Once settled, largely self-sufficient in shaded positions.

Fertilizing

Light leaf mould mulch in spring

A thin layer of leaf mould or compost in spring mimics the woodland floor conditions it prefers. Heavy feeding encourages leggy growth.

Pruning

Shear leggy patches in early spring

If sections become bare-stemmed after several years, shear hard in early spring. Regenerates quickly from the base. Otherwise minimal pruning needed.

Growing Tips

Patience in the first years

Pachysandra is notoriously slow to establish. It may look sparse for 1-2 years before the underground runners knit together into a dense carpet. Do not give up on it.

Shade is essential

This plant scorches in full sun. It performs best in partial to full shade under trees or on north-facing banks where other ground covers struggle.

Shear leggy patches

If sections become bare-stemmed or patchy after several years, shear the entire area back hard in early spring. It regenerates quickly from the base.
