How to Grow Neem
Azadirachta indica
Neem is a fast-growing tropical evergreen that thrives in full sun and well-drained sandy soil. It is extremely drought-tolerant once established but cannot survive frost or temperatures below 5C. Water young trees regularly during the first two years, then only during prolonged dry spells. Needs minimal feeding and pruning. Best suited to tropical and subtropical climates or grown as a container tree brought indoors over winter in cooler regions.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Rarely needs feeding. Apply a balanced organic fertiliser once in early spring for young trees. Mature trees are self-sufficient in most soils.
Watch For
- Scale insects
- Neem leaf miner
- Sooty mould
Companions
Turmeric, Moringa, Curry leaf
Care Requirements
Light
Full sun
Needs full sun for best growth. Tolerates light shade when young but performs best with 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. In cooler climates grown indoors, place in the brightest spot available.
Watering
Drought-tolerant once established; water young trees regularly
Water regularly during the first 2-3 years after planting. Once established, neem is extremely drought-tolerant and rarely needs supplemental watering. Avoid waterlogged conditions which cause root rot.
Fertilizing
Minimal; light organic feed in spring for young trees
Mature neem trees are self-sufficient in most soils. Young trees benefit from a balanced organic fertiliser once in early spring. Over-feeding is unnecessary and can promote weak growth.
Pruning
Prune in late winter to shape; tolerates hard pruning
Prune before new growth begins in late winter or early spring. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Neem tolerates drastic pruning to control height or improve shape, responding with vigorous regrowth.
Spacing
8-10m apart for full canopy; 5m for windbreaks
Space trees 8-10m apart for full canopy development. For windbreak plantations use 4-5m spacing with later thinning. Neem develops a wide spreading crown at maturity reaching 12m diameter.
Growing Tips
Protect from cold
Neem cannot tolerate frost or temperatures below 5C. In temperate climates, grow in a large container and bring indoors before the first frost.
Water young trees deeply
Neem is extremely drought-tolerant once established but young trees need regular watering for the first 2-3 years to develop a deep root system.
Prune for shape
In cooler climates, prune to keep the tree compact and manageable for container growing. Neem responds well to hard pruning and produces bushier growth from multiple growing points.
