How to Grow Mayapple
Podophyllum peltatum
Mayapple is a hardy spring woodland wildflower that emerges early, flowers briefly, then goes fully dormant by midsummer. Plant rhizomes in autumn in dappled to full shade with moist, humus-rich soil. It spreads steadily to form a lush ground-covering colony — give it space. Only two-leaved forked stems produce the single nodding white flower and the edible (ripe only) lemon-yellow fruit. All other plant parts are toxic. No feeding or pruning needed; simply let the foliage die back naturally each summer.
When to Start
Plant directly outdoors once soil temperature reaches 10°C. No seed starting needed — grow from bulbs, tubers, or sets.
