How to Grow Matilija Poppy

Romneya coulteri

Perennial

Plant in full sun in the poorest, most free-draining soil you have — this is a California desert native that thrives on neglect. Water sparingly in its first year; once established, stop completely in summer. Cut all stems to the ground in late winter. Expect it to spread by rhizomes.

Care Essentials

No feeding needed — this plant thrives on neglect in poor, dry soil. Fertilising encourages suckering and rank foliage at the expense of flowers.

Watch For

  • Root rot from overwatering or heavy clay soil
  • Powdery mildew in humid conditions
  • Aphids on young shoots

Companions

Cistus, Phlomis, Salvia, Eryngium, Ornamental grasses

Care Requirements

☀️ Light

Full sun, south- or west-facing

Requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sun. Shade reduces flowering dramatically and encourages floppy, rank growth. A south- or west-facing open position is ideal.

💧 Watering

Drought-specialist — minimal water only

Water sparingly in year 1 to help establishment. From year 2 onwards, withhold all supplemental irrigation in summer. In Mediterranean climates, rainfall alone is sufficient. Summer water promotes root rot.

🌱 Fertilizing

No feeding required

This plant thrives on poor, infertile soil. Feeding encourages excessive vegetative growth and suckering at the expense of the spectacular flowers.

✂️ Pruning

Hard cutback to ground every late winter

Cut all stems to ground level in late February or early March before new growth breaks from the roots. This annual hard prune is essential to prevent a build-up of dead woody material and to maintain vigorous flowering shoots.

🍂 Mulching

Dry grit mulch only — avoid organic mulch

A light grit or gravel mulch helps drainage at the crown. Avoid moisture-retaining organic mulches (compost, bark) which keep the crown wet and promote crown rot, especially over winter.

Growing Tips

No summer water

Summer irrigation is the fastest way to kill this plant. Once established (after year 1), withhold all water from June to October. Rainfall alone is sufficient in mild climates.

Poor soil is best

Rich, amended soil encourages lush leafy growth and suckering at the expense of flowers. Plant into unamended, gritty, or even stony ground.

Hard prune every winter

Without an annual hard cutback to ground level, stems become woody and flowering drops off. This is the single most important care task for this plant.

Give it room

Rhizomes spread vigorously — sometimes several metres in a season. Site well away from lawns, paths, and borders you don't want colonised. A buried root barrier helps contain spread.
