How to Grow Jacaranda
Jacaranda mimosifolia
Jacaranda needs full sun, well-drained soil, and a warm, frost-free position. Plant in spring and water well during establishment; once settled, it is moderately drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering and rich feeds — lean conditions encourage the spectacular purple bloom. Protect young trees from frost. Flowers appear on bare or lightly leafed branches in late spring to early summer, carpeting the ground beneath in purple.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring as growth resumes. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds which promote leafy growth at the expense of flowering.
Watch For
- Aphids on new growth
- Mushroom root rot (Armillaria)
- Leaf spot
- Frost damage to young shoots

☀️ Light
Full sun; warm and frost-free position
Needs at least 6 hours of direct sun daily. Best flowering occurs in a warm, sunny spot sheltered from cold winds. Unsuitable for frost-prone sites without winter protection.
🌿 Spacing
8-12m; allow for wide canopy spread
Mature jacarandas spread 8-10m wide and grow 8-15m tall. Give ample space from buildings, paved surfaces, and other trees. Root spread can affect nearby structures.
💧 Watering
Weekly when young; drought-tolerant once established
Water weekly during the first 2-3 seasons. Once established, reduce to deep occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Avoid waterlogging — well-drained soil is essential.
🌱 Fertilizing
Light spring feed only; avoid high nitrogen
A balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring is sufficient. High-nitrogen feeds produce leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Established trees in average soil need no regular feeding.
✂️ Pruning
Light prune in late winter; minimal cuts
Remove dead, crossing, or congested branches in late winter before bud break. Avoid heavy pruning which delays flowering. Shape young trees in the first few years to build a strong framework.
🍂 Mulching
5-8cm mulch ring; protect trunk from contact
Apply organic mulch over the root zone, keeping it several centimetres from the trunk. Refresh annually in spring. This retains moisture and insulates roots against temperature extremes.
Growing Tips
Plant in a warm, sheltered spot
Choose a south- or west-facing position sheltered from cold winds. Jacaranda is frost-tender — even a light frost can kill young trees or damage flower buds.
Lean soil encourages flowering
Avoid fertilising heavily. Trees grown in rich soil or given lots of nitrogen produce lush foliage but few flowers. A light spring feed is all that is needed.
Water young trees regularly
Establish with weekly watering for the first 2-3 seasons. Once the tree has a good root system, it tolerates dry spells well.
Mulch the root zone
Apply a 5-8 cm layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk. This retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and insulates roots against cold.
Pests & Diseases
Pest Aphids
Identification: Clusters of small soft-bodied insects on new shoot tips and leaf undersides; sticky honeydew and sooty mould on leaves below
- Blast off with a strong jet of water
- Encourage natural predators such as ladybirds and lacewings
- Use a systemic insecticide if infestations are persistent
Disease Mushroom Root Rot (Armillaria) Armillaria mellea
Symptoms: Yellowing foliage, dieback of branches, white fungal fans under bark at soil level, honey-coloured toadstools at the base in autumn
Treatment: No cure once established; remove and destroy affected roots and wood. Improve drainage and avoid replanting susceptible species in the same spot.
Prevention: Plant in well-drained soil; avoid wounding roots during cultivation; keep trees vigorous
Disease Leaf Spot
Symptoms: Brown or dark spots on leaves, sometimes with a yellow halo; premature leaf drop
Treatment: Remove and dispose of affected leaves; avoid overhead watering
Prevention: Ensure good air circulation; water at the base rather than overhead
