How to Grow Hesperantha
Hesperantha coccinea
Hesperantha is a gem for late-season colour, producing elegant crimson star-shaped flowers from September well into November. It thrives in moist but well-drained soil in sun or light shade and forms spreading clumps of grassy foliage. Plant corms 20cm apart in spring and keep soil consistently moist during the growing season. Mulch the crown in autumn in cold areas. Divide congested clumps every 3-4 years in spring to maintain flowering vigour.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Light feed in spring as growth resumes. A balanced liquid feed in midsummer helps support the late flowering display.
Watch For
- Slugs on young spring growth
- Crown rot in waterlogged winter soil
- Red spider mite in dry summers
Companions
Asters, Ornamental Grasses, Sedum, Persicaria
Care Requirements
Light
Sun or light shade
Thrives in full sun or partial shade. Tolerates more shade than most flowering perennials but flowers best with good light.
Watering
Keep moist through summer
Unlike many perennials, hesperantha needs consistent moisture through summer to build energy for autumn flowering. Do not let it dry out completely.
Fertilizing
Light feed in spring and midsummer
A light balanced feed in spring as growth resumes. A second liquid feed in midsummer supports the late flowering display.
Pruning
Remove spent stems in late autumn
Cut spent flower stems after flowering finishes. Leave grassy foliage until it dies back naturally in winter, then tidy away.
Growing Tips
Keep soil moist in summer
Unlike many perennials, hesperantha needs consistent moisture through summer to build energy for its autumn display. Do not let it dry out completely.
Late flowers extend the season
Hesperantha flowers when almost everything else has finished. Plant near asters and grasses for a stunning late border that peaks in October.
Divide regularly for best flowering
Clumps become congested after 3-4 years and flowering declines. Lift and divide in spring, replanting the healthiest outer portions.
Mulch for winter protection
In cold or exposed gardens, apply a thick mulch of bark or straw over the crown in late autumn after foliage dies back. Remove in early spring.
