How to Grow Flowering Gum

Corymbia ficifolia

Perennial

Flowering Gum thrives in full sun with well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Plant in a sheltered position away from cold winds and frost pockets. Water regularly during the first two years to establish roots, then reduce as the tree becomes drought tolerant. Apply low-phosphorus native fertilizer in spring. Prune minimally in late winter to shape and remove dead wood. Frost-sensitive when young so protect with fleece in cold spells.

Care Essentials

Apply a low-phosphorus native plant fertilizer in spring. Avoid high-phosphorus feeds which can cause toxicity in eucalypt-family trees.

Watch For

  • Root rot (Phytophthora)
  • Psyllids
  • Borers
  • Canker

Companions

Grevillea, Callistemon (Bottlebrush), Westringia, Lomandra

Care Requirements

Light

Full sun

Needs at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Tolerates light afternoon shade in very hot climates but flowers best in full sun.

Spacing

6-10m apart

Allow 6-10m between trees depending on cultivar. Dwarf grafted forms can be spaced at 4-5m. Check mature spread of your specific cultivar.

Watering

Regular when young; minimal once established

Water deeply and regularly during the first 1-2 years after planting to establish roots. Once established, the tree is drought tolerant and only needs deep watering during extended dry spells.

Fertilizing

Low-phosphorus native feed in spring

Apply a controlled-release low-phosphorus fertilizer formulated for native plants in spring. Avoid high-phosphorus feeds which cause toxicity in eucalypt-family trees. Over-fertilization risks leaf burn.

Pruning

Minimal pruning in late winter

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Formative pruning when young to establish a strong framework. Minimal pruning needed once mature.

Mulching

Organic mulch, away from trunk

Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch well clear of the trunk to prevent collar rot. Replenish annually in spring.

Growing Tips

Site selection is critical

Choose a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Avoid frost pockets and exposed windy sites which damage flowers and can kill young trees.

Establish with deep watering

Water deeply once or twice a week during the first two summers. This encourages deep root development and drought resilience. Reduce once established.

Low-phosphorus feeding only

Eucalypt-family trees are sensitive to phosphorus. Always use a native plant fertilizer with low or no phosphorus. Standard garden fertilizers can cause leaf burn and decline.

Enjoy the summer spectacle

Flowering occurs in summer with masses of red, pink, or orange blooms that attract birds. Avoid pruning in the lead-up to flowering to maximize the display.
