How to Grow Dryopteris
Dryopteris filix-mas
Perennial
The male fern is one of the most reliable and adaptable garden ferns. It forms a sturdy, upright shuttlecock of dark green fronds up to 1.2 m tall. Semi-evergreen in mild winters, fully deciduous in cold ones. Thrives in shade to partial shade in moist, humus-rich soil but tolerates drier conditions than most ferns. Virtually indestructible once established — needs only an annual tidy of old fronds in late winter.

Care Essentials
No feeding required. Mulch with leaf mould in spring to mimic the natural forest floor — this provides all the nutrition needed.
Watch For
- Slugs and snails on young fiddleheads in spring
- Rust (orange-brown pustules — not to be confused with spore cases on frond undersides)
- Vine weevil larvae can damage crowns in containers
