How to Grow Citrangequat
× Citrofortunella
Citrangequat is one of the hardiest citrus hybrids, tolerating brief frosts to -10C. Plant in full sun against a sheltered south-facing wall, or grow in a large container that can be moved under cover in winter. Feed fortnightly with citrus fertiliser during the growing season. Fruit ripens in autumn and winter — pick when fully orange. Prune lightly after harvest to maintain shape.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Citrus fertiliser every 2 weeks during flowering and fruit set (April-August). Monthly in winter.

☀️ Light
Full sun essential
Needs at least 6 hours of direct sun daily. A south-facing sheltered position is ideal in cooler climates.
🌿 Spacing
3m apart in ground
Space 3m apart for in-ground planting. Can be grown in containers of at least 50cm diameter for flexibility.
💧 Watering
Regular but not waterlogged
Water regularly during the growing season, especially container plants. Reduce in winter. Never let roots sit in water — good drainage is critical.
🌱 Fertilizing
Citrus feed fortnightly in season
Apply citrus fertiliser every 2 weeks from April to August. Reduce to monthly in winter. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds which promote leaf growth over fruit.
Growing Tips
Wall training pays off
A south-facing wall provides reflected heat and frost protection. Essential in zones where temperatures regularly drop below -5C.
Consider container growing
Container growing allows you to move the tree under cover during severe cold snaps. Use a pot at least 50cm diameter with good drainage.
Harvest timing matters
Fruit left on the tree too long becomes pithy. Pick when skin is fully orange and gives slightly to pressure.
Pests & Diseases
Pest Scale Insects
Identification: Small brown or white bumps on stems and leaf undersides. Leaves may become sticky with honeydew.
- Wipe off with a damp cloth or cotton bud dipped in methylated spirit
- Spray with fatty acid-based insecticide
- Introduce parasitic wasps in greenhouses
- Apply systemic insecticide containing acetamiprid
Pest Citrus Leaf Miner
Identification: Silvery trails visible within young leaves, causing them to curl and distort.
- Remove and destroy affected leaves
- Hang pheromone traps to monitor populations
- Spray with spinosad-based product when new growth appears
Disease Citrus Canker
Symptoms: Raised brown lesions with yellow halos on leaves, stems, and fruit.
Treatment: Remove and destroy affected material. Improve air circulation.
Prevention: Avoid overhead watering. Disinfect pruning tools between cuts.
Disease Root Rot
Symptoms: Yellowing leaves, wilting despite moist soil, dark mushy roots.
Treatment: Improve drainage immediately. Repot container plants in fresh compost. Reduce watering.
Prevention: Ensure excellent drainage. Never let pots sit in saucers of water.
