How to Grow Chinese Lantern Plant
Physalis alkekengi
Chinese lantern (Physalis alkekengi) is a spreading hardy perennial grown for its striking inflated orange-red papery husks in late summer and autumn, prized for dried flower arrangements. It thrives in sun to partial shade in any well-drained soil. Be aware it spreads vigorously by underground runners — plant in a sunken pot or with a root barrier in formal borders. Cut stems down in late autumn to display and harvest the colourful lanterns. All parts are toxic if ingested.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Apply a balanced granular fertiliser in spring as growth resumes. Chinese lantern does not need heavy feeding — overfeeding encourages excessive running at the expense of the ornamental husks.
Watch For
- Spreading via underground runners — can become invasive in borders
- Aphids on young shoots
- Flea beetles making small holes in leaves
Pet Safety
Care Requirements
Light
Sun to partial shade
Tolerates a wide range of light conditions from full sun to partial shade. Best colouring of the husks is achieved in a sunny position.
Watering
Moderate — keep moist but not waterlogged
Water regularly through summer especially in dry spells. Established plants are fairly drought-tolerant but produce better husks with consistent moisture.
Fertilizing
Balanced feed in spring
A single application of balanced granular fertiliser in spring is sufficient. Avoid overfeeding which promotes excessive vegetative spread.
Pruning
Cut to ground in late autumn
Cut all stems to ground level in late autumn after harvesting or displaying the dried lanterns. Divide clumps every 2-3 years in spring to keep the plant in check.
Spacing
60 cm apart, with containment
Space plants 60 cm apart but contain the spread using a sunken bottomless container or a physical root barrier, especially in borders with other plants.
Support
None needed
Stems are sturdy enough to stand unsupported. No staking required.
