How to Grow Cast Iron Plant
Aspidistra elatior
The cast iron plant lives up to its name — it tolerates low light, dry air, irregular watering, and neglect better than almost any other houseplant. Water only when the soil is completely dry, keep out of direct sun, and feed sparingly just two or three times a year. It grows slowly but is virtually indestructible, making it perfect for dark corners or forgetful gardeners.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
Feed sparingly 2–3 times per year with a diluted balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Over-feeding causes brown spots on the leaves.
Watch For
- Scale insects on leaves and stems
- Spider mites in dry conditions
- Brown leaf tips from fluoride or salt build-up in compost
- Root rot from overwatering

☀️ Light
Low to medium indirect light
Keep out of direct sun which causes scorched patches. Thrives in north-facing rooms and hallways where other plants fail.
💧 Watering
Water only when soil is completely dry
Very drought-tolerant. Overwatering is the main cause of death. In winter, once a month may be sufficient.
🌱 Fertilizing
2-3 times per year with diluted balanced fertiliser
Feed lightly during the growing season only. Aspidistra has very low nutrient needs and overfertilising causes brown leaf tips.
✂️ Pruning
Remove individual brown leaves at the base
No other pruning needed. Simply cut damaged or yellowed leaves at soil level. The plant grows slowly and maintains its own shape.
🌿 Humidity
Tolerates dry air well
Average household humidity is fine. No misting or humidity trays needed. Performs well near radiators where other houseplants struggle.
Growing Tips
Water only when completely dry
Aspidistra rots easily from overwatering. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings — once every 2-3 weeks in summer, less in winter.
Tolerates very low light but avoid direct sun
One of the few houseplants that genuinely thrives in dark rooms. Direct sunlight scorches the leaves, causing brown patches.
Wipe leaves to remove dust and improve photosynthesis
The large leaves collect dust. Wipe monthly with a damp cloth to keep the plant healthy and the foliage glossy.
Pests & Diseases
Pest Scale Insect
Identification: Brown or white raised bumps on stems and leaf undersides; sticky honeydew residue
- Wipe off with cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol; repeat weekly until clear
- Apply systemic houseplant insecticide containing acetamiprid
Pest Spider Mite
Identification: Fine pale stippling on leaves; tiny webbing visible between leaf and stem in severe cases
- Increase humidity by misting; wipe leaves with soapy water weekly
- Spray with miticide containing abamectin for persistent infestations
Disease Root Rot Phytophthora sp.
Symptoms: Yellowing lower leaves; soft brown mushy roots; foul smell from soil
Treatment: Unpot, remove all rotten roots, repot in fresh free-draining compost; reduce watering drastically
Prevention: Use free-draining compost; never leave pot sitting in water; ensure drainage holes are clear
Disease Leaf Spot / Brown Tips Fusarium sp.
Symptoms: Brown spots or brown leaf tips; sometimes with yellow halos
Treatment: Remove worst-affected leaves; ensure pot is not waterlogged
Prevention: Avoid cold draughts; do not overwater; keep away from radiators
