How to Grow Sedge
Carex oshimensis
Carex oshimensis is a compact, evergreen sedge forming neat mounds of arching foliage. Plant in partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. It is low-maintenance and evergreen — simply comb out dead leaves in spring rather than cutting back hard. Excellent for edging, ground cover, and containers.
Yearly Lifecycle
Care Essentials
A light mulch of compost in spring is sufficient. Avoid heavy feeding which produces lax, untidy growth.
Watch For
- Vine weevil larvae in containers
- Brown leaf tips in very dry conditions
- Aphids on flower spikes (cosmetic only)

☀️ Light
Partial shade preferred
Tolerates deep shade once established. Variegated forms show best colour in bright indirect light but scorch in hot direct sun.
💧 Watering
Needs consistent moisture
Tolerates damp soil well. Container plants need regular watering but established garden plants cope once roots are deep.
🌱 Fertilizing
Light compost mulch in spring
Avoid heavy fertilising which causes floppy growth. A thin mulch of compost or leaf mould in spring provides sufficient nutrition.
✂️ Pruning
Comb out dead leaves in early spring
Never cut back hard. Gently pull or comb out brown dead leaves in March. If the plant becomes tatty, trim lightly but never below the green growth.
❄️ Overwintering
Fully hardy and evergreen
No protection needed. The evergreen foliage provides winter structure. Container plants are fine outdoors in most UK winters.
Growing Tips
Never cut back hard — comb out dead leaves instead
Carex is evergreen. Cutting back hard can kill the plant. Instead, gently comb out dead brown leaves with your fingers in early spring.
Excellent for containers and shady spots
Most carex thrive in partial shade and look superb in pots. They add year-round texture where flowering plants struggle.
The variegated Evergold cultivar brightens dark corners
Carex oshimensis Evergold has a bright cream central stripe that illuminates shady borders and containers even in midwinter.
