How to Grow Calamondin

Citrofortunella microcarpa

Perennial

Calamondin is a compact ornamental citrus producing fragrant white flowers and abundant small orange fruits year-round in ideal conditions. Grow in containers with specialist citrus compost and excellent drainage. Place outdoors in full sun from late May to September, then move to a cool bright frost-free room (8-12°C) for winter. Feed every two weeks with citrus fertiliser during the growing season. The very sour fruit is excellent for juice, marmalade, and as a lime substitute.

Growing Tips

Perfect pot plant

Calamondin's compact habit makes it one of the best citrus for container growing. Use a 40-50cm pot with citrus compost and ensure excellent drainage.

Feed through the season

Feed every two weeks with specialist citrus fertiliser from April to September. Yellowing leaves between veins often signal iron or nitrogen deficiency — use a chelated citrus feed.

Bring inside early

Less hardy than kumquat or lemon. Move indoors before the first frost to a cool bright spot (8-12°C). Avoid warm centrally heated rooms which cause dramatic leaf drop.

Versatile sour fruit

The small orange fruits are too sour to eat fresh but make excellent juice, marmalade, and calamansi sauce. They also freeze well for year-round use.

Spacing & Planting

Plant spacing 200 cm
Row spacing 250 cm
Mature height 200 cm
Mature spread 150 cm

Container plants 1.5-2m apart. Dwarf habit makes it ideal for 35-45cm diameter pots. In-ground spacing 2-2.5m in frost-free climates.
