How to Grow Bilimbi

Averrhoa bilimbi

Perennial

Bilimbi is a cauliflorous tropical tree that fruits directly on its trunk and branches. In the UK it needs a heated greenhouse with a minimum of 12°C over winter. Give it full sun or bright filtered light, keep the soil consistently moist, and feed monthly with a balanced fertiliser. It fruits year-round in warm conditions — harvest regularly to encourage new flushes. Prune after the main harvest to control size; avoid cutting the trunk where fruit buds form.

Care Essentials

Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser throughout the growing season. Switch to a high-potash feed when fruit clusters appear on the trunk and branches. Apply a slow-release granular fertiliser in spring to support the main fruiting flush.

Watch For

  • Scale insects on trunk and older woody growth
  • Mealybugs in leaf axils and on stems
  • Glasshouse red spider mite in hot dry conditions
  • Anthracnose on fruit and leaves in humid poorly ventilated conditions
  • Root rot from overwatering

Care Requirements

Light

Full sun; heated greenhouse in UK

Needs full sun or bright filtered light for best fruiting. In the UK, grow in a heated greenhouse or large conservatory. Tolerates partial shade when young but fruits best in maximum light.

Watering

Keep consistently moist; good humidity

Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist. Bilimbi does not tolerate drought. Maintain good ambient humidity especially under glass. Reduce watering slightly in winter but never allow the soil to dry out completely.

Fertilizing

Monthly balanced feed; high potash when fruiting

Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly throughout the year. Switch to a high-potash feed when fruit clusters appear on the trunk and branches. Apply slow-release granular fertiliser in spring.

Pruning

Prune after harvest; avoid cutting the trunk

Prune lightly after the main fruiting flush to control size and open the canopy. Remove dead, crossing, or inward-growing branches. Avoid heavy pruning of the trunk and main branches where fruit buds form.

Overwintering

Minimum 12°C; keep moist over winter

Not frost hardy. Maintain a minimum of 12°C over winter in a heated greenhouse. Reduce watering slightly but do not allow the soil to dry out. Supplementary lighting helps maintain growth in low-light UK winters.

Spacing & Planting

Plant spacing 500 cm
Row spacing 600 cm
Mature height 800 cm
Mature spread 500 cm

Small cauliflorous tropical tree that fruits directly on trunk and branches. Can be kept to 3-5m under glass with pruning. Space generously for good air circulation.
